Happy Chinese New Year to one and all, and welcome to the Year of the Pig!
February 5th marked the turn of the Chinese New Year, and Adelaide continued the celebrations well into the weekend with their 16th annual Chinatown Adelaide Lunar New Year Street Party!
Held on Saturday 9 February from midday ’till the late hours of the evening, Chinatown Plaza played host to a cultural explosion of food, drinks and entertainment for the whole family!
The street party festivities even burst out onto Gouger Street, with a beautifully decorated stage hosting an extensive entertainment program showcasing the talents of local Chinese musicians and dancers.
Emcees Jane Shen and Eric Ho kicked off the afternoon celebrations from 12pm – 2:15pm, whilst Stasey Guo and Baocheng Wei continued keeping crowds entertained from 2:15pm – 4:30pm.
The official events program commenced at 6pm, with emcees Vincent Wang and Kechen Dong (Rebecca) hosting the night’s main festivities until 7:35pm.
As the sun went down, Amanda Zhang and Matt Lazarus kept the entertainment coming as they hosted the evening events program from 7:35pm – 10pm.
With entertainment ranging from opera to K-pop, acts that graced the stage included Chinese Opera by Lily Li, a fashion catwalk by the Chinatown Qipao Ladies, K-pop dance sensations Up Tempo Dance Crew K-OTIC and a martial arts demonstration by the SA Qigong and Tai Chi Club.
The Trinity College Lion Dance Troupe shimmied their way through Gouger Street between 11:30am – 11:45am as they wowed audiences with their traditional lion dance.
The Chinatown Qipao Ladies strutted their stuff in the Qipao Parade from Moonta Street to Gouger Street, flaunting the latest fashions Chinatown has to offer.
Off-stage activities also included face painting and glitter tattoos, Cool 4 Kids balloon art, a meet and greet with Peggy Pig and several interactive music sessions.
Wishing one and all a safe and prosperous new Year of the Pig ahead!
