Plain Jane Launch Party

Adelaide, there’s a trendy new gal on the block – and she goes by the name of Plain Jane.

Despite what her name may suggest, she’s far from “plain”: she’s a spacious, two-storey cafe by day, restaurant by evening and sophisticated bar by night. They always did say women were the better multitaskers.

The Adelaide Insider was invited to christen Plain Jane’s arrival onto the local bar scene at her Official Launch Party held on Tuesday 6 July, which proved that Adelaide’s nightlife is not merely limited to the weekends and can in fact live on through the weeknights.

Formerly occupied by COS restaurant, the 1837 heritage-listed building has been transformed into a suave, contemporary space that also retains elements of its original rustic charm. Abstract full wall murals in rich earthy tones are juxtaposed by chesterfield armchairs, brass chandeliers and gold-framed mirrors, emulating the atmosphere of a retro speakeasy.

Yet it is the upstairs colour-changing neon back-lit bar and pumping DJ deck that bring Plain Jane back to the twenty-first century, creating a unique fusion of decades that makes for the perfect backdrop for any party, event or function.

Local restaurateurs Nu Suandokmai (the mastermind behind Lantern by Nu) and Vince Loprete (from Italian Kitchen @ Two Twenty) have combined forces to carefully curate a breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks menu that incorporates a hint of Italian, French, Thai and Lebanese cuisines.

Soak up the early morning sunbeams whilst sipping lattes over brunch in their front European-inspired al fresco dining area. Or gather your colleagues together for post-work Friday drinks and tapas platters to share as you listen to DJ tunes all evening long.

However long you stay for, no trip to Plain Jane is complete without trying their signature cocktail: The Parisienne Jane. Chambord, vodka, pineapple and sirop de monin collide to create an alcoholic concoction that’s sugar, spice and all things nice. Word has it that Jane learnt this one on her semester abroad.

Thank-you for the invite, Plain Jane: as springtime draws closer and the daylight lingers longer into the evenings, we have a feeling we’ll be coming to hang with you on a regular basis.
