Looking for a decent laugh at this year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival? Then look no further than ‘Kyle Dolan – No Place Like Home’, a deeply personal yet relatable stand-up comedy show that is currently playing at Gluttony.
Local filmmaker, comedian and producer Kyle Dolan makes his solo Fringe debut in ‘No Place Like Home’: a show that documents his experience moving from his birthplace of Scotland to little old Adelaide in South Australia where he would then grow up.
Through the use of stand-up comedy and storyboard illustrations, Dolan pitches audiences a screenplay for the movie of his life. Atop a little easel on stage, Dolan stacks a pile of storyboard cards that feature screenplay illustrations and “remastered” movie posters with pun-filled new titles.
Having graduated with an MA Film from the Screen Academy Scotland in Edinburgh, Dolan pays homage to his love of filmmaking with plenty of references to movies ranging from ‘The Godfather’ to ‘Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me’. In fact, Dolan appears to have a personal vendetta against Mike Myers, blaming the thick Scottish accent he famously faked in the movie ‘Shrek’ for being the main cause of his childhood bullying.
As the title may suggest, ‘No Place Like Home’ explores the concept of ‘”home”: questioning whether it is a place, a feeling or just a romanticised version of reality that we’ve made up in our heads. Dolan gets deeply personal with audiences, revealing how a death in his family resulted in trauma, conflict and therapy early on in his childhood. By turning his trauma into humour, Dolan harnesses all he has experienced to create a comedy show that is real, raw and refreshingly funny to watch.
Dolan is certainly one to keep an eye on, being a 2024 Fringe Fund Recipient as well as hosting the hit late night show ‘Liars & Clowns’ which is also playing at Gluttony from Friday 16 February – Saturday 2 March.
